Reconnecting With the Trust Already Within You

Earlier this month, in I Began Anyway, I shared how I opened the document to begin writing, even though I didn't know how it would come together.

Something interesting happened when it was time to write this next blog. It was easier to begin.

I still had reasons to put it off. I felt myself wobble, then remembered the promise I'd made to myself.

And I began.

Instead of spending days waiting, I returned to that commitment and began.

It reminded me of building strength at the gym.

You decide you want to get stronger. And when that alarm goes off, you have a choice. Stay in bed or put on your gym clothes.

Trust works much the same way.

And sometimes, strengthening trust begins with reconnecting with what's already within us.

Here's a practice you can use.

Part 1: Activate the Trust Already Within You

Close your eyes and remember a time when you weren't sure what to do or how things would turn out.

And you found your way.

It might have been something big or something as simple as having a difficult conversation or trying something new.

Remember what happened. What did you do? How did you find your way?

Take a moment to recognize what you did.

You didn't have all the answers. And you found your way.

What does that tell you about yourself?

Now think of someone who knows you well. Someone who has seen you at your best and during your hardest times, and loves and trusts you through it all.

Imagine being with them.

See their face. Hear their voice. Feel what it's like to be in their presence.

Notice how it feels to be seen, loved, and trusted.

Now turn that same love and trust toward yourself.

You found your way before. You've done it more times than you may realize.

Where do you feel that trust in your body?

Stay with that feeling for a moment. Let it grow.

This is your trust. It's already within you.

Part 2: Put That Trust Into Practice

Now think of something you've been doubting yourself about or putting off.

Notice what you're thinking and feeling.

Remember the trust you felt in Part 1.

Where do you feel it in your body?

Reconnect with that feeling. Let it grow.

Now, from this place of trust, ask yourself:

What do I already know in my heart?

What would I do next if I trusted myself?

Imagine yourself taking that step, without knowing exactly how it will turn out.

Feel what it's like to move forward, trusting yourself to find your way.

Now take that step.

It doesn't have to be big. Simply begin moving toward what you want.

Each time you reconnect with that trust and take your next step, you're creating more evidence that:

I can count on me.

P.S. Want to return to this feeling of trust whenever you need it?

Record yourself guiding the two visualizations on your phone.

Then listen to your own voice guiding you back to what's already within you. 💖
